By the docks, a modern build that’s part of a leisure complex. Bit of am open-plan shack inside and quite gloomy in feel, why not hang a chandelier from the ceiling as a centrepiece and extra light? Three Orkney ales, the Cliff Edge was poor (NBSS 1.5) so I went for the more obvious Belhaven 80/- as my second and it was much better (3.5). GBG listed but, you know, Scotland.

Ok, I weakened; I gave in and I sampled Oban's JDW outlet. You've been to a Spoons, so you know the score. It's got a carpet, the like of which you've not seen before. There's a comatose customer with a member of staff in attendance. There's not quite enough of them serving behind the bar and none have a clue who's next. There's 6 mostly unadventurous ales on sale, though one is now off. So much the same as your local one.

How does this differ? Well, it's located beside Oban harbour, gateway to the Isle of Mull and other islands and surrounded by mountains - though mostly you get to see a docked ferry. Internally, it's a right barn of a place, easily the biggest pub in town and with the widest range of ales. Also, the wi-fi's hopeless.

But no way is it the best pub in town. Visit if you're a fan of the chain (or one of those tickers). Check it out if you're in need of cheap grog or food.

If you want a more authentic experience, or don't have the patience to stand at the bar, hoping you'll eventually get served, there are other and better pubs in town. As you'd expect.

Large barn-like structure owned by Wetherspoon's next to the ferry port and the railway and bus stations.

With only 3 other pubs serving real ale in the town and with much lower prices than elsewhere, I was unsurprised to see that this place was very busy. However, it was also far too noisy and boisterous for my liking. A few people were in for meals. Others were there to simply get bladdered, seemingly competing with one another to see who could shout the loudest.

Greene King Abbot & Sharp's Doom Bar are the regular ales. Guests were Greene King IPA and the seasonal Elgood's Berry Xmas Everyone, Rudgate Evil Elf & Otter Claus. One of only 2 places in Scotland I found serving any real ales from England (not that I was particularly looking for them), all of the beers were pretty bland and uninspiring.

By all means come here for the best real ale selection in town, but if you want a proper pub choose pretty much anywhere else instead.
