At the edge of town down the busy Cambridge Road, the large signs outside saying "Cash Only" give you pause for thought before entering, but it's worth persevering with a fist full of dollars. The interior is among the most quirky I have been in,left of the front door there are a series of banquettes and all kinds of bric-a-brac on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. This room has a small servery access while the main part of the bar is in the right room, again full of pub artifacts, carpeted, angling throphies,a vast collection of bed pans and copper saucepans and a small barrier into the back parlour with it's collection of upright comfy chairs, looking like a nursing home. The daytime TV on the flatscreen was almost fitting.
The interior has not been knocked about ,so original fireplaces remain .You may need to raise the guv'nor by ringing a bell although the friendly regulars told me there is one bell that must not be rung....without explaining why.Just one ale available in Nethergate Suffolk County (NBSS Good but a malty brew unworthy of a second).Had there been a better ale range higher marks would have been awarded. As it stands ,bring some cash ,have a beer and enjoy the old school charm.
