This is the more traditionally pub-like of the village’s two hostelries, which are conveniently located almost next door to each other. The main bar is L-shaped with the serving area in the corner next to the door. There is also a small alcove to the rear containing a pool table and games machines and a lounge/dining area to the side. All of the dozen or so customers were in the bar on the Friday night I visited, however. It has a cosy look with a real fire, maroon padded seating and wood panelling. Both the TV and juke box are unobtrusive and the walls are decorated with interesting photos and drawings depicting scenes from the past of the village and its surrounding industrial heritage. The range of beers on draught is limited to Caledonia Best, Tennent’s Lager, Tennent’s Light and Guinness, but there is an impressive gantry stocked with a good variety of whiskies and other spirits. Breakfasts, lunches, snacks and food takeaways are served on weekdays, with evening meals available at weekends. There is a beer garden at the back, but, being midwinter, it was closed.
