I was looking forward to a Chow Mein with pork balls when I heard that I was going for dinner at the Green Dragon. Turns out is was actually a pub, and a pretty good one at that. The pub is in two sections with the bar area to the left and a seating area down some steps to the right. The bar area has a serving counter on the rear wall adjacent to a dartboard to the left. In the right wall is a large inglenook fireplace and there is some seating in the right front extension. The background music can be heard throughout the pub, but mainly in the bar area. There are four tables in the right hand seating area and the old right hand stone wall has a fireplace built in that houses a burner. The leaded windows throughout give an oldie world feel in a touristy coastal pub kind of way. Out the front is a walled patio area with seating and out the back is a surprisingly large L-shaped beer garden with a patio that leads to picnic tables on AstroTurf. The gents toilets are in an out-building at the rear.
The bar supports three handpumps that were drawing Bath Ales Cheshire Cat, Otter Brewery’s Dragon Bitter and Salcombe’s Seahorse. A premium keg range is also available alongside Fosters, Guinness and St Austell’s Proper Job on keg. This is the only pub for 2-3 miles so the pricing is not far off London. Food is available from a small menu, I went for the Boerewors Roll which is a spicy South African sausage in a ring like a Cumberland. This was priced at £13. There is also a stone baked pizza menu on a chalkboard in the bar. Prices range from £8 for a basic 9” Margarita to £17 for a 15” Mighty Meaty. The chips came in heart shaped bowls… Does this make them Love Spuds?
The is a cosy pub that although food led still retains a feeling of village boozer. The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and I would have no hesitation returning here for another extended period.
