I was here less than an hour before kick off for a Rhinos game, so it was busy but not overcrowded, though the pub was incredibly noisy. This was because loud music was being played, and the amount of distortion suggested that their sound system can't really hack it. Video screens display beer options, but there are so many bottles and cans available that it takes a couple of minutes for the screens to come around to draught beers again, and it's easier to just go to the bar, which is on the left, with a plethora of keg taps immediately apparent and a group of eight hand pumps at the far end, with one cider and five beers on. I went for Northern Monk Great Northern Bitter 4.5%, but this was a poor beer, whether because the brewery doesn't understand this type of beer or because it was badly kept or served I couldn't say. Certainly the head on the beer had disappeared by the time I'd found a table and sat down, but also the beer had no real condition to it - it was almost like a keg beer in its lack of complexity and flavour. The staff were efficient and well drilled, and I noticed how, as Rhinos fans started to make their way to the stadium, the furniture was being straightened and a small stage set up for a band that was due to appear later in the evening. Based on this experience I'll be looking at other options for future visits to Headingley, but I'm sure others will have a better time here than I did.
