Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Market Cross

Most pubs closed by Wetherspoon's seem to decline after the chain has moved on. I got the feeling that this town centre pub has not suffered the same decline as others. In fact, you would not really know that this wasn't still a Wetherspoon's, apart from it having far less cask ales and a few less customers. The other noticeable difference was that music was playing. It was at an acceptable level, which I regard as an improvement on Wetherspoon's.

Toilets are the usual trek upstairs and there are plenty of games machines. The pub featured Halloween decorations and a Halloween "after-party" was being advertised. Children are allowed in.

At the bar, the 10 handpulls are still present. However, just 3 were clipped. Cask ales on were Marston's Wainwright & Love Lane Session IPA. A third clip was turned round. It seemed to be for a cider (Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon). There were also a few keg beers, including Love Lane New England IPA.

Each table featured a menu, similar in style to Wetherspoon's and with very competitive pricing. Drinks were also good value and I thoroughly enjoyed my Love Lane Session IPA.

With only one other pub in the town of Holywell serving cask ale, this one still seems to be the best there is in the town.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Market Cross (JD Wetherspoon)

In different circumstances, this standard-issue 'spoons converted from a Woolworths would hardly be worth more than a cursory note but in an otherwise uninspiring former market town (and long-standing pilgrimage centre, apparently) it is definitely the place to go for a decent pint. Even with a number of duplicated clips on the two banks of five handpumps, there were several interesting beers including two from Big Bog Brewery - the 6.0% Quagmire Premium Ale and the 7.0% Bog Super Genuine IPA - and Dark Side of the Moose from Purple Moose (like the other real ales, all normally £1.99 but luckily for me just £1.85 on Mondays).
