The Masons Arms seems to be the favourite watering hole for the locals when in New Mills. Situated in the older part of the town, a little away from the commercial Market Street area, it has quite a modern feel inside with stone tiles on the floor.

There is one large room, with a separate smaller room to the right-hand side. Outside to the right side of the pub is a car park with part of it sealed off for outdoor drinking, presumably a relic from the Covid era.

The bar itself is set to the rear left-hand side and features plenty of stone. Bar blockers (men, women and children) were in situ, making it a little difficult to see what was on. But my choice was soon made.

Marston's Wainwright Gold is the regular beer. Guest beers were from the local Storm Brewery - Tornado & Isobar IPA, along with a couple from Robinson's - Dizzy Blonde & Unicorn. Apparently, this used to be a Robinson's house. Two further handpulls were clipped with a couple of ciders from Lilley's - Crazy Goat Cider & Pina Colada Cider, whilst another handpull was unclipped.

There is a fruit machine, a quiz machine and a jukebox. A TV was off and music was playing, possibly from the jukebox. A reasonable sized crowd was creating a good atmosphere for a midweek afternoon. My half of Tornado was in good condition and befitted its listing as one of just 2 pubs in the town of New Mills in the 2024 Good Beer Guide (Chalkers Pool & Snooker Club has closed down since publication). In all, I found this to be the best pub I tried in New Mills and a good example of a small town locals' boozer.

This former Robinsons house has now become a free house, with grey painted exterior and an interior that won't be winning any prizes in 50 years time. Hard to describe, but my notes made at the time mentioned "loud music, and decor to match". There are eight hand pumps, but this isn't so much a real ale destination pub as a back street local. The beers included Robinsons Unicorn and Storm Silk of Amnesia (both doubled), plus Holts Bitter (which I went for), Wainwright and one each from Milestone and Stockport Brewery. The beer was fine, but I regretted getting a pint rather than my usual half, because the noise made it a bit uncomfortable for me to stay here long enough to drink it.

The Masons Arms is a Robinsons house situated on a steep hill just outside the town centre. The pub looks quite attractive from the outside although this does flatter to deceive as the interior is a little tired looking and perhaps could do with a little TLC.On entering there is room to the immediate right(which on my short visit resembled more of a crèche than anything else)with the bar also on the right, with a middle seating area plus piano to the left of the entrance.Sampled a pint of the 1872 which was ok but nothing to write home about.
