At first, it didn't look upon, and only when I saw the door ajar did I decide to venture in. Adequately described below but probably more run down than it was 6 years ago- my impressions were that, despite some evidence of faded grandeur (especially looking up at the ceiling), you can't see it lasting for much longer. That said, it was reasonably busy on a weekday afternoon, seemingly with workers from the various industries that still cling on here. One girl, who I think was foreign, came in for a bottle of water, and left immediately. Atmosphere and service were pleasant enough, considering it can't be often they get strangers in here. No real ale of course. In fact, beer came from a can, mine was a Guinness, which tasted- well, like Guinness from a can.
It's a dying breed, a corner pub in an industrial area with very few other amenities around. The inner Winfield in me is heartened to see these pubs still surviving, which is probably the reason I went in in the first place. Catch them while you can. But in all honesty there's very little reason to come here.

This is a detached corner pub. A Victorian pub that once serviced the local industry, as well as the railway depot at Saltley; it was nice to return for the first time since the mid-1980s. The pub has a cream upper storey, with dog-tooth cornice. The lower storey is in white, with black paintwork on the pilasters and pediments. The interior has a couple of rooms, the smaller back room was not being used. The main bar room is V-shaped. It is in red and white, with some wood panel. There is a chessboard floor. There is no TV, but there is a pull-down screen (not on) and a jukebox, although there was no music. A few bottles, mirrors and a mounted fish and bird feature for interest. There is a pool table. The service was fine and a few locals were in. Beer; no real ale, just the usual tap stuff with Cobra lager and M&B MILD. I just had a shandy. A good example of a working back street boozer, just a pity it has no real ale.

Corner industrial local. Not comfortable as such but ok, clean and some nice traditional features, wood panel walls, nice windows and the bar pillar is very good. Pool table, video machines and a juke box. No real ale.
