A traditional roadside pub on a main road along the Western edge of the Blackdown Hills. It’s family owned and has a good pub feel to it, certainly more welcoming and pleasant than most chain pubs. The outside, including the hedge at the front, is a bit unkempt so it would be easy to miss from the fast road if you’re not aware of where it is as it blends nicely into its surroundings. There is a large tarmac car park at the side. There is also a good sized garden, away from the road, though much of this was given over to a marquee with its own bar for a function the day we visited. The main bar has a tiled floor and feels more Mediterranean than British rural, but it’s not unpleasant. It includes a large stone fireplace with a copper-hooded woodburner in it, a few bar stools and a couple of tables for diners with dogs. There is also a small dining room off to one side. They offer freshly cooked food at reasonable prices, the young staff were welcoming and the landlord was a decent bloke. Eight casks on stillage behind the bar, but only one on the handpump at a time. Jail Ale was on when we visited, with Palmer’s Dorset Gold ready to be put on when the time came. We were very pleased to see a boxed local cider also behind the bar. Kegs available were Guinness, Thatcher’s Gold, Pravha, Carling, Madri and Devon Red. This was a great place to stop for lunch and I’d be happy to come back next time I’m passing.
