An excellent pub in a quiet village near the river, which shows what difference an enthusiastic landlord can make. Nice old building with slightly random layout, as a good pub should be. Several ales from the extended Marstons range on offer (Good Beer Guide listed) and nice range of home cooked food, but it is all the little extras that make it stand out, including a loyalty card scheme. Of particular note is the 'Dog Bar' - probably the most canine-friendly pub I have seen. Also garden and regular barbecues outside. Well worth a diversion off the main road or an excursion from nearby York.
