Now operated by Hungry Horse, visiting this pub was a pretty disappointing experience. There is a good sized car park which, like the pubs frontage, was well kept. The garden is uninspiring, while the presence of a children’s play area is a good indicator to stay inside when the sun comes out, although this late Autumn, it was unused so just looked ominous. The atmosphere inside was gloomy, a poorly lit L-shaped open plan bar and dining area, plus a second dining area on one side, their brown carpet adding to the gloom. There were several female staff members around doing nothing, there were very few customers in, and it took an age to get served; three staff members walked past us even though we were the only people standing at the bar. There was no cask ale available, the two handpumps on the bar wrapped in sellotape, their IPA clips reversed. That left a keg choice of Guinness, Madri, Thatcher’s Gold, three Thatcher’s fruit ciders, Carling, Peroni and San Miguel. The only bottled beer, which is what we ended up being grudgingly served by a rather sour-faced barmaid, was Old Speckled Hen. Despite its convenient position just off the A371, I’d keep going to find somewhere better in future; that won’t be difficult.
