Blackthorn _ left this review about Rose & Crown

A traditional and attractive stone-built pub located on a country lane slightly away from the village centre, it’s not likely to get too much in the way of passing trade, but it was nonetheless quite busy on our recent Friday afternoon visit, although much of that was due to a wake being held in the large function room at the rear.

Although the function room is a little more contemporary, the original part of the pub is quite traditional in style and maintains a multi-room layout, with two or three small rooms across the front, with a larger room housing the bar counter connecting these original rooms and the function room. The original rooms have attractive flagstones on the floor, whitewashed ceiling with a few black beams, and predominantly whitewashed walls with some wood panelling on the lower parts. Seating was a mixture of regular chairs with some fitted wooden pew style benches, whilst each room had a small fireplace. One of these was quite unusual being stone built in a circular design, and I can’t help thinking it was meant to represent a beer barrel whilst a real barrel had been fashioned in to a small table. A number of copper plates were on a shelf above the fireplace, as well as some copper tankards and a couple of old black and white photographs of the locale. The adjoining room including the bar counter was broadly similar in style, albeit with green patterned carpet on the floor, a few more beams on the ceiling and a large stone fireplace with a wood burning stove.

Beers on tap were all from Wadworth’s with their 6X, Horizon and Henry’s IPA, whilst a fourth pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Stan’s Cheddar Valley, Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze and Stowford Press.
