Since Blackthorn’s review, below, this pub has been in what is probably going to turn out to be a terminal decline. Its main business now is Thai food, though it doesn’t open at lunch time. The garden and car park are still in good condition and the view from the garden is great. The same cannot be said for the pub itself. It looks shabby and unkempt from the outside, flaking paint and rotting wood on the door and a general air of neglect. On entering we asked the limacious bar-being if we could bring dogs in. It said we could, so we came in, sat down and went to the bar to order. No cask ale or real cider was available. There was nothing on keg despite the presence of some taps on the bar. We were offered nasty wine or bottled beer, none of which appealed. It felt too grubby to risk eating, and it was suggested we should be better off at the New Inn down the road. Absolutely the worst pub I’ve seen in a while.

Great to see this pub re-opened after being closed for a few months. Not much seems to have changed, just a lick of paint on the outside and a general tidy-up, and I think the smart slate tiled floor in the main bar may be new.

There's a good view of Blagdon Lake from the bottom of the car park, and a small outside patio area. Inside it's got a cosy country pub ambience with a carpeted bar area off to the right with an attractive stone fireplace, and another carpeted area off to the left more geared up for dining with several of the tables being reserved. Lots of horse brasses around the place, a couple of attractive stained glass windows and lots of pictures on the wall complete the country pub feel.

It was very busy on a recent Wednesday evening visit, with most tables being taken by diners. I got the impression that most of the punters were locals checking out the place to see what it's like since it re-opened about three weeks ago. The couple running it were friendly and helpful, although they seemed to get easily distracted and as a consequence service at the bar could be a little erratic.

There was a decent pub grub menu chalked up on a board with a good selection at reasonable prices. We tried the lasagne and the Thai chilli chicken and both were very good. There is a separate board with a selection of wines chalked on it.

Beer choice was a slightly disappointing Butcombe and Doom Bar, although there were four pumps on the bar so hopefully they may get some more on in time. The solitary cider was Blackthorn. Interestingly the Guinness was canned rather than draught, and apparently came out the can flat. It was then placed on a small tray, attached to what looked like a Guinness font, which blasted it with ultrasonic sound waves to release the nitrogen stored within it. It all sounds impressive and certainly produced a creamy head within a few seconds, but whether it actually tasted any good I wouldn't like to say. I'll leave that to someone who actually likes the stuff.

All in all I would highly recommend this pub if you're looking for food. As for just popping in for a beer, it's perhaps not quite such a good option due to the limited choice of drinks and potentially limited seating if it's full of diners, but it's still a very pleasant spot with friendly hosts.
