At first glance this is a fairly scruffy roadside inn looked like it might be either a grockle trap or a run down dive bar. Fortunately it was neither. There is a small pub car park enhanced by a rented field, opposite. The frontage is a paved patio with tables in covered pods, a good idea on first glance but with limitations once you think abut it – all very tacky, in fact. Inside, the décor belongs firmly in the 1970s including battered paintwork and old carpet throughout. There were structural timbers visible, though these failed to make the pub feel rustic or ancient. The two front bars are similar in character, though one has an open fire on a raised platform in an inglenook, and there is a garden room at the rear. Food is basic pub grub including Sunday lunches. The staff were not in the first flush of youth but were in any case efficient enough, while the clientele were a mix of elderly diners, locals and visitors to the various outdoor entertainment businesses nearby. Three handpumps on the bar, Otter Bitter went off as we arrived leaving Teignworthy Reel Ale and Dartmoor IPA, both in good condition. There were also 4 real ciders in boxes on the bar from Sandford Orchards and Norcott. On keg were Guinness, 1664, Carling, Poretti and Thatcher’s Gold. It’s not a destination in its own right, but I’d drop in for a beer if in the area.
