A traditional looking pub that was perhaps an old farmhouse at one time before being swallowed up by the nearby budget hotel and bowling alley, the interior is now quite contemporary although they have made an effort to retain some of the original features.
It’s quite a good size internally, and is largely open plan although divided in to a couple of different areas with the use of partitioning and balustrade. Flooring is predominantly carpet with wood strip in places as well as some attractive sandy coloured tiling and there were thick, chunky looking timberwork supports and beams. Whether these are original I’m not sure, but if not they’ve done a good job of making it look quite authentic unlike the exposed brick walling which looked very modern. A fire-place full of logs looked as though it was probably more decorative than functional. There is a small patio area at the side, although the noise from the adjacent dual carriageway made it less than relaxing.
The menu offered an extensive selection of dishes divided in to sections such as burgers, pies, grills, classics, etc., and the latter category included typical pub grub dishes such as cod & chips, lasagne, fish pie, sausage & mash, etc., and these were mostly priced somewhere between about £9 and £12. My chicken tikka makhini tiffin was a decent enough dish with a tasty curry, rice, lentil dahl, a very garlicky naan bread, poppadum and a couple of dips. Not bad at all, although whether it was quite worth £12.89 is another matter.
Beers on tap were Old Hooky, Old Golden Hen and Greene King IPA. The solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk.
