My last visit here was in October 2018. It coincided with a football game at the nearby Edgeley Park. Once again, my visit yesterday coincided with a football game, which this time I was heading to. The pub is normally closed on a Tuesday but it does open up when there is a match on. Otherwise, it's open all day Saturday and only the evenings on other days of the week.

When I walked in, the barmaid and others in the know all went quiet and looked surprised to see me. You wouldn't necessarily know that the pub was actually open from outside and opening times on the door do list it as closed on a Tuesday. So, perhaps they don't get many strangers when they do open on a Tuesday?

Just 3 of the 6 handpulls were clipped, with Wincle Wincle Waller, Holden's Golden Glow & Warrington Ales Bolt of Lightning. The cider (or actually pyder) was Lilley's Crazy Goat. SALT Loom was the pick of the keg options. Locals opened up a little after I had ordered, with one telling me that the Warrington Ales beer which I had ordered was actually brewed at 4T's.

I ended up sitting next to the door and didn't wander around too much. Although it appears to be just the one sub-divided room. A fireplace has a skeleton above it. There are hundreds of pumpclips on one wall, with more on the ceiling next to the bar. A few CAMRA certificates can be found on another wall. The front section where I sat contains lots of bric a brac.

Listed in the current Good Beer Guide, I've just realised that my review concurs very much with BF a couple of years ago. There are some striking similarities with our visits. Last time I came here, I scored it a 7/10. But these days, there are several better pubs than this one in the town, including the Crown which I had also climbed up the hill from.

ORIGINAL REVIEW July 2017

Approached after a stiff climb up from The Crown, the side window full of clutter and a rather tatty appearance left us all thinking the pub must have closed.I crossed the road ,tried the door handle which thankfully gave access to a very quirky interior. Think Steptoe and Son,with very little natural light and worn furniture but creating a wonderful drinking atmosphere. You will be clocked on entry but it's quite an inclusive pub,and we all felt quickly at home. The 6 handpumps were not all used and the barman apologised for the strength of some of his choices, but that was music to the ears of my thirsty crew.We had outstanding pints of Hopcraft East Bay Pilgrimage, while the other choices were Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild and Raw Brown Bitter.
There is a good book exchange section,an outside beer terrace, again full of bric a brac. This is a small boozer, old school but one that should not be missed when in Stockport and I would happily return.

UPDATE

A revisit found a much tidier interior but a loss of the previous chaotic charm.Lots of bare walls in the middle of a small refurb, although the neat display of pump clips still shows that this pub will feature a constantly chnging rota of small brewery ale.Just three options on a Wednesday evening visit, two low ABV's and a very good Deeply Vale Rambling Man (NBSS 4) and although it's a charming small locals boozer with community ownership these days,no longer a must visit when in Stockport.

Going to leave this unrated, as it would be unfair when so quiet.

It is in the Good Beer Guide. I missed my train by a minute (bus held in traffic) and fired up the app to see if there was somewhere I could idle away 50mins for the next southbound one.

This is 0.2miles from the station, if you can get the staff to let you through the ticket barriers to take advantage of getting under the railway line. They provide a ticket at one end, which you hand in at the other.

A short walk to this community pub, surrounded by high rises. The wall nearest the main road doesnt have windows, so unsure if this was open, but onto the side road and in to a small, L-Shaped room.

The only people here were either working behind the bar or in some way helping run the place.

Still had 6 hand pulls on. How they get the turnover, I cannot say, but my Beeston Brewery Worth the Wait was perfect.

Decor is junk-shop esque, with all manner of nick nacks on the shelves. Nice drone shot photo from the air above a contempi organ.
