A large village pub, a Georgian building which has been extended and encroached on by more modern development. There is a fair sized car park whose irregular outer edges make parking hazardous, The ground floor rooms have been knocked through to form a single large [-shaped bar, and there is a long, thin conservatory which tries unsuccessfully to be a cosy restaurant area. The size and general layout of the pub make it feel a bit barn-like, while the open fires in their original hearths fail to add warmth to the atmosphere. The landlord was friendly and welcoming, as were the locals. Dogs are particularly welcome here. Food is a bit bi-polar – some good traditional pub grub competing with a few pretentious dishes that didn't fit the village pub market and weren't good value. Two ales on draft, both in good condition. I preferred the Butcombes over the Doombar, but I'd have been happy with either. Worth dropping in when passing, but it could be better given that it's now the only pub remaining in the village.

A fairly featureless and shabby interior, with three main areas. Left side is just a jumble tables and chairs with a snug leading off, main bar under an arch, further over was pool table and quizzer. Large kids play area to rear. Two ales, Altons Pride (under-par, served in a manky glass) and Doom Bar. Friendly barflys gave us a heads-up on the other local pub. To be honest, they were the only part of this place that I found positive.
