This is a classic and timeless village inn, the likes of which are seldom seen around the country these days. But there are a few similar examples in the west of Herefordshire.
After driving along country lanes further and further away from any form of civilisation for what seemed like an eternity, we were on final approach and decided that there surely wouldn't be a pub in this location. But we descended a hill on the narrow lane and the Carpenters Arms loomed large ahead of us.
A few other souls had also managed to discover it. Some were sat outside. The others were crammed into the tiny public bar along with a dog. Indeed the small bar in the corner took some getting to with the dog taking the only remaining floor space not taken by humans.
The bar is actually split into two sections. Nobody was sat in the section furthest from the bar itself. We took residence there, before being joined by another group at an adjacent table. Elsewhere, there is a large dining room which was unused during our visit.
Butty Bach & 6X were the real ales, served by a friendly couple who I guessed were the landlord and landlady. An equally friendly lady had greeted us outside on our arrival and also bade us farewell when we left. My guess was that she was the cook. Both ladies and gents toilets were outside, further adding to the traditional nature of this hostelry.
Another remote Herefordshire pub that is well worth the effort to visit.

Quiet and excellent village local of the type you just don't find anymore. The landlady presides from a seat in front of the bar, calmly observing and reminding you this is a 'public house'. Nice food menu. Good apples. Excellent view of the Skirrid Fawr ridge from the tables to the front. A pub for conversation.
