With a name like this I was expecting a micropub, but it's a handsome, traditional pub that's slightly out on a limb from the town centre. The central bar contains much to admire, including curved windows and wooden gantries, and gives the pub a feeling of having separate areas. Traditionally furnished throughout, there's a pool table at the left side of the pub and a free jukebox. Some might call it slightly careworn but for me that enhances the character. Despite the presence of a solitary Old Speckled Hen handpump, no real ale was served and I suspect this has been the case for some time.
Despite the lack of ale, there is a lot to attract the fan of traditional pubs here and the overall ambience was very friendly and chatty on a Thursday evening, if dispiritingly quiet. Hope it can keep going.
