Taken over and had some cash splashed at it, this is neo-rustic in a clean woody and stony way. The island bar remains serving a bar area in front and to the right with a large fireplace housing modern burner and a novel table which is essence a plank of wood suspended from a ceiling beam, with upholstered stool seats either side. A light and bright dining area is behind the bar with a landscaped garden out back with new accommodation block on the left. A private dining area is to the right of the bar via a door which has its own, large fireplace. Hook Norton Hooky Gold, Clavell & Hind Coachman and Blunderbuss along with Rosie's Pig real cider. Freshly re-thatched too, this is a world away from its previous incarnation.

One of the many satellite villages dotted around the Oxfordshire market town of Banbury, Barford St Michael is one of the smaller ones, and houses The George with its limited opening times (7-11 Monday to Saturday and 1-5 on Sundays). A small bar faces you as you enter, with two of the three handpulls clipped, serving St Austell's Trelawny and Tribute. A half of the former came in at £1.80 and was in decent enough nick. The interior is somewhat tired, and coupled with the opening hours, makes one wonder whether it is being operated merely as a hobby/chore/second job. The convivial landlord deserves a mention though and ups the score to a respectable 5.
