The more workaday Spoons of the two in town in a weird 80’s building with a turret, located in the more downmarket area of the town centre. That said, it's a decent quasi old skool JDW with a few modern touches and it looked different to how I remembered, WhatPub tells me it was subject to a £800k refurb in 2020. Three guest ales all very samey style wise, mine was a beer festival leftover which gives you an idea; it was on the borderline of NBSS 3. Three free sachets of Lemon Fresh wipes with my food, never seen that before. Much, much quieter than the Drapers though I get the feeling that this is the late nite students-and-clubbers outlet.

A Wetherspoons, so popped in for a beer and breakfast - the patrons looked like a rough lot but the beer was decent and there was a good selection available. An odd building on the outside and not too bad inside. Opened 1996. Rated 5

The College Arms is a long and thin Wetherspoons with a bar counter on the rear wall that faces seating along the front windows. More seating is found to the right and left of the bar and in the left rear is a sunken seating area where access can be gained to a large rear patio area. The bar supports two banks of six hand pumps that were drawing the usual suspects alongside Maxim Brewery’s Double Maxim and Wolf Brewery’s Granny Wouldn’t Like It. The staff were very friendly, but the other Spoons in town had a far superior ale range.

Definitely a below average Spoons - a tidy but unexciting interior, not much in the way of guest ales (Double Maxim and Old Peculiar) and some very indifferent service from someone who appeared to be in charge but was more interested in squawking into her walkie-talkie than providing customer service. I don't think I have ever had beer served without eye contact before! Next please.
