I know nothing of the history of this place, so I don't know if it's a traditional pub or something that's been transformed into one late in life. If the latter, it's certainly bucking a trend, and it's been very tastefully done. There were four hand pumps on the bar, with a cider, two beers from Yates (Bitter and Best Cellar) and Goodhew's Dry Stout from Barngates. I normally like the Yates Bitter, but decided to go for the stout as I'd had the same beer earlier at the Badger in Rydal. Unfortunately it was not such a good beer here, not by any means off, just not outstanding like it had been at the Badger. This is a modern-style bar with traditional elements, including a nice stone fireplace with a solid fuel stove. There were settles and pouffes, with a couple of high chairs at the bar. This is definitely one to bear in mind, especially if you get tired of drinking Jennings, and it's much better, in my view, than the Castle Bar opposite.
