The streets of Widnes were deserted after I left the match at the nearby Halton Stadium, and I imagined that the people were all at home after a frantic day in the retail park. Not a bit of it: they were all at the Derby, watching the second half of the league cup final from Wembley. The atmosphere was friendly and jovial - I assume there were no great allegiances at stake (Arsenal v Man City) or at least no one had drunk enough alcohol to feel the need of expressing any. There was just one real ale on the bar (one of two hand pumps): Moorhouses Blond Witch, a beer I would normally pass, but in this instance it was in very good condition and just hit the spot before I made my way to the station. It helped that it was also the cheapest beer of the day at £1.20 for a half; the guy in front of me at the bar got two pints of lager and two of Guinness for £9.90, so this pub is pretty good value.
