This isolated pub, presumably built in response to the arrival of the railway from Leeds to Morecambe, stands a good half mile outside Giggleswick village. It's a not unpleasant walk from Settle, or there's a bus that calls a few times each day. The pub doesn't open at lunchtimes in the early part of the week, and when I arrived at five minutes before opening time there was no sign of life, making me think the pub wasn't going to open after all. At one minute past, lights came on and the door was held open for me. Phew!
The bar is in a lean-to on the right of the original building, with access through a porch, and the ground floor of the main building is a large dining room. The interior has been modernised with a degree of taste, with plain walls enhanced by a display of good quality black & white photos of local scenes. There are two sets of two hand pumps on the bar, with two beers repeated: Settle Ribblehead Bitter and Timothy Taylor Landlord. Previous beers are represented by a small display of pump clips on the bar back: I counted 12 or so, mostly local.
Four regulars called in for a post-work drink: they all had lager, and didn't speak to each other. The lass who served us was friendly, and obviously knew her regulars. My half of Ribblehead was all right, but not as good as the same beer at Sydney's in Settle an hour beforehand. I can't see me coming back any time - not because it's really bad; it's not. Just that there are better pubs around here that are more convenient.
