Frankly the most interesting thing about this one is the history of the building and its first conversion into a pub so I will start with that. It was originally built as a Presbyterian church during 1902, when the stone still in situ on the east wall was laid, and completed in 1903. The building became redundant after the formation of the United Reformed Church in 1972 and was in serious danger of disappearing altogether when in March 1976 Haringey Council announced that the building would be demolished and replaced by a 4-storey block, but a vigorous and loud campaign by locals saved the building from demolition.
As verified by the Hornsey Historical Society “In 1995, 22 years after the congregation had left, Taylor Walker Brewery proposed opening a Firkin pub, particularly popular with young people.” And so, it became the Fantail and Firkin, resplendent with inhouse brewing equipment. With the demise of the Firkin Chain it became an O’Neill’s bar for several years until M&B closed it in 2017 and converted it into the Miller and Carter Steak House it is today.
So today this is more a restaurant than a pub, although you can technically just come in to use the bar for a drink, although why you would want to do that is a bit of a mystery as there is nothing interesting on the bar as verified by the reviewer below.
So, fine if you want a steak and either a Guiness or Neck Oil to go with it, but for just a pint by all means pause a while to look at the fantastic building, but then move on to the ‘spoons or The Village Green, or if visiting at the weekend, take a left up Princes Avenue and search out the Muswell Hillbilly Brewers Taproom.
