A big and very rambling Gothic-looking Greene King food pub with a typical brash decor in greys and greens. It is laid out in various different rooms and areas, although the front dining part was not in use on this visit. There are also some tables on a terrace outside. There are still four handpumps with just IPA and the GK house ale on, plus the Lilley's clips - the house ale was in perfectly good condition. Service was good, food predictable.

Several years ago, pre-COVID, this place had a very decent selection of real ales, and despite being a Greene King establishment, there were several guests to choose from. Fast forward to 2025 and it's a different story, with four hand pulls for cask with an unexciting offering consisting of Greene King IPA, Greene King Amplified, and TT Landlord. The fourth hand pull was presumably off but was clipped for the two Lilley's bag-in-a-box ciders.
It didn't feel particularly friendly or welcoming, though there was no real issue with the service. It definitely felt more food led inside, but outside in the sun seemed more popular with drinkers. Shame it is a Greene King place really but to be fair my Amplified, which I assume to be a seasonal ale, was not bad at all. The Lilley's Raspberry Lemonade cider also slipped down nicely as a refreshing option on a warm day.
Plenty of Manchester photos on the walls but probably feels like the least Manc pub ever!

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The John Gilbert
Large food-led Greene King pub, with a variety of seating and dining areas around the bar and outdoors. Bright modern interior. Very busy on a Saturday night, but with a 'curfew' for children at 21:00. Surprisingly good choice of real ales from ten handpumps, with many offerings from smaller local and regional breweries (e.g. Blakemere Hit & Run) in addition to the inevitable IPA and Old Speckled Hen.
