An old school locals keg only pub, an L shaped room and horse racing on TV was a give away of what to expect. There is one unused handpump on the bar so I ended up with a Guinness.

I didn't notice anything Irish about this pub now, unless you count the green paint job on the exterior. In my view it would look better if all the layers of paint were removed from the ground floor external wall to reveal the brewery tiles that are probably underneath it all. Judging by the cockerel over the pub sign it was probably hitherto a Courage pub (confirmed by the manager) although the green banded windows are reminiscent of a Charrington fitting. An unused doorway on the Landseer Rd side looks as if may have led into a jug and bottle bar.

It's still very much a locals' pub, with a warm feel about it. I like the red curtains framing the windows, the traditional furnishings, and carpet on the floor. The pool table is still at the back, and there's a (or maybe two) dartboard. The counter looks old, but the gantry looks a classic 70s addition.

I liked this pub a lot, and would have liked it a lot more had there been a real ale available. It seems they sometimes sell Doom Bar, but its availabilty is a bit hit and miss. I would say visit this one if you want to enjoy a traditional pub atmosphere, but not for the beer.

This is an attractive Victorian corner pub with newly painted green livery, ornate Charrington's leaded lights and still sports a Courage cockerel over the sign frame.
The windows are textured which means that you can't really see in and even if you could, the windows are covered with claret coloured drapes, similar in colour to the carpet and upholstery to the traditional seating; the rear of the pub and bar apron are modern boarded.
Otherwise, there's a central bar with attractive pot shelf and various knick-knacks. A pool table dominates the rear and there's a dartboard too. There's no food as such, just bar snacks.
The locals and barmaid seemed jolly enough though the pub certainly didn't seem to be anything like as Irish as described below, if indeed it's Irish at all now.
This is a rare, seemingly largely unspoilt traditional pub. Unfortunately there's no real ale, though the Guinness was good enough and if the TVs hadn't been droning away playing dross, I'd probably give this place an extra point. Worth seeking out if in the area.
