Part of a small Island wide chain of large, family friendly, food led pubs. The Bargemans has a scenic location perched on the side of the furthest navigable reaches of the River Medina. Inside it is a huge long pub, divided into two but pretty much completely given over to tables for food service. In fact, even early on a Friday evening it is pretty hard to find a lone drinking seat that isn’t reserved. This is a very commercial place stretching the definition of a pub - more large restaurant with a bar. The beer range is small and not in particularly good condition. Having said that this isn’t an awful place. If you are in a group out for a meal in Newport it’s a pretty good choice. The problem for me is the place has gradually changed over the decades and lost its charm.

A large place on the quayside which has totally sold its soul to the tourist market. There might well be some original building in there somewhere but I have seldom seen such a collection of fake timberwork and nautical knick-knacks. All very twee and atmospheric but far too contrived. Having said all that, it is not too bad a place for a drink, if you can avoid busy times. The bar is in the centre with a long room extending off one way and a 'family room' the other, although there is not a great difference. There is a large patio outside but the noise from the main road is annoying. Ales were Ringwood Best and 49er, Hobgoblin, Youngs Special and Yates Sea Dog.

Large waterside pub, playing on the theme and seems to be a tourist pub on the edge of town. Fine enough but very busy
