The Ivory Peg is a rectangular open plan Wetherspoons with a serving counter across the rear wall that faces a row of high tables before open plan seating that runs across the front windows, the central section is raised. On the counter are two banks of five hand pumps that were drawing two of the usual three plus Bays Brewery’s Devon Dumpling, Oakham’s Citra and Purple Moose Brewery’s Elderflower. The major draw of most Spoons is the range of ale, so it was disappointing to find half of the hand pumps out of action before the weekend has even started. Must try harder!

Situated at the base of a modern (2000s?) block and apparently named after the discovery of an ivory tuning peg from a mediaeval musical instrument during construction. Layout is one long and fairly shallow room with a slightly raised area by the window, so quite light. Magenta and purple picked from the colour wheel. Four guest ales, my Wimbledon SW19 was really rather good (NBSS 3.5) which justifies the GBG listing. Chelmsford is hardly a town (sorry, CITY) of pubbing riches so based on my pint, this should be a default stop. 6.5

Our final stop in Chelmsford before a curry and the train journey home was the town's branch of Wetherspoon's.
Hoping to use a CAMRA voucher and not being able to use their app, we were seated in an area where table service was being offered, which I thought was quite a good idea. In line with other branches, ordering is at the table, payment is then taken at the bar and drinks are served to the table.
The usual suspects were on - Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar. A guest beer was Bishop Nick Devine. Ciders were Weston's Old Rosie & Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon.
It's the usual 'spoon's open-plan layout with benign furnishings. Toilets are a trek upstairs and I managed to get reprimanded by a young member of staff for forgetting my face covering on my trip to the facilities.
Not the best end to a Chelmsford crawl. But the town certainly has plenty to offer.
