Shepherd Neame pub with some major historic provenance (as mentioned below, claims to be the third-oldest pub in England as well as being the haunt of Jarman the murderous landlord - who killed and robbed his wealthy overnight guests by dropping them into a vat of boiling oil). The interior is impressive and although up-to-date in general décor terms, heavily tips its hat to the past (reading elsewhere it seems the place was refurbed a few years back which has caused anguish – I can only go on what I saw last week). Highlights include: flagstone floor, original beams (stripped), leaded windows and doors. The modern American style chrome bar is a bit of an aberration but it kind of works (ie could be worse). There’s also a very tidy dining room further on through a doorway. A scale model of the building is displayed in the bar. Selection of papers available. Three SN ales clipped; Spitfire (good), Masterbrew (off) and Whitstable Pale (very nice). Keg included Oranjeboom, Whitstable Black and Whitstable Blonde. Also a decent whisky selection, so we decided to have a chaser in addition to the pints. Well-worth a diversion off the motorway to sample, is this.

The exterior certainly shows the age and history of the place, it is said to be the third oldest pub in the UK dating back to 1106. Inside there is a large fireplace marked 1117 in the ironwork. They have found a reasonable balance between old and new, although the modern bar stools are probably better in an American diner than an historic pub. Big focus on food and there seems to be both a pub and dining rooms within the large property. Four handpumps with two Windsor & Eton beers and a beer brewed especially for the pub that is yet unnamed. Look out for the macabre mechanical model to the left of the fireplace, it represents the scene from history when one landlord murdered wealthy guests by getting them drunk offering them a room upstairs with a bed that tipped them in a vat of boiling water below. They don't do accommodation now!

Suffered a ghastly refurb about two years ago when all character and history was stripped away. Completely lost its olde worlde charm so i never go there anymore, was an old regular now find it too sad because its not really a pub anymore. Despite this the food if thats what you to a pub for ?is supposed to be very good.
