Remains as was from my December 2017 review – a super interior (*** CAMRA rating) with a lot of charm and a really welcome first port of call after seeing Stockport at its worst as I walked to here from the station. The usual Robbies range on my visit, including Old Tom for the season. A half of that registered an NBSS 3, with the Unicorn weighing-in with an impressive 4. Friendly barmaid to all and sundry with good jokes as well, made this one feel like a proper community local. I really enjoyed my hour here and it’s moved up the local league table as a result. 8.5
December 2017
A CAMRA heritage Robbie's pub (naff battleship grey exterior paint job excepted) which was slated for demolition for a shopping centre previously. A porch entrance with a room to the left, lobby bar and a wonderful lounge (‘smoke’) room beyond this, naturally lit by a skylight. Vast amounts of light varnished oak wood panelling, clock-inlaid bar back, bell-pushes and traditional seating, a real museum piece (“last refurbished in the 1920s” proclaims a sign). Upright piano spotted. Four pumps with one ale – Unicorn – (the Old Tom was sadly still conditioning) which was in great shape. There were also two pumps for (unavailable) cider. A shame that given the timing (Friday), only one beer was on, surely a bit of pump mismanagement there. Would have been a higher mark otherwise. Rated 7.5

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Swan with Two Necks
The fine exterior of this splendid Robinsons pub has been given a slight makeover in battleship grey which might suggest some gastro-pubification inside but fortunately nothing could be further from the truth. The entrance corridor leads to the drinking lobby in front of the main part of the bar counter, with the attractive Smoke Room beyond. A separate 'vault' at the front features its own counter from the side of the central servery, and all three rooms have very atmospheric wood panelling. We found three of five handpumps in use, offering Unicorn, Dizzy Blonde and the seasonal Old Tom (in fine form). Always worth a visit when in town.

What a lovely heritage pub, and all the better for being a proper drinking pub - only the rather loud music keeping it from attaining a 9 or even a 10 in my estimation. The exterior is perhaps not as promising as it might be, but only to be expected in this shopping centre location, but the drinking corridor on entering is first rate, and the rooms on the left, both before and after the bar counter, are superb. (See the review from PSM below for more detail, though the carpet in the smoke room has been replaced by modern laminate). A further room on the left looks like it would have been originally part of the living quarters but is also well preserved.
I've been here a few times without getting around to posting a review here - on my latest visit I went for the seasonal Old Tom, which was excellent (NBSS 4). What a shame about that dreadful pop music. Nevertheless, this is my go to pub on a visit to Stockport.
