All the tables within the roped off section outside the Middle Earth Tavern were being used during a recent sunny late Monday afternoon visit. Having just arrived in Whitby I decided to have a drink inside while my nose acclimatised itself to the fishiness emanating from the other side of the harbour wall. With flagstone floor throughout, the exposed brick wooden topped bar counter runs across the rear wall facing the entrance and some seating in the front left where a group of boisterous pensioners were playing dominoes. The exposed brick décor runs throughout, including a fireplace that houses a burner on the left wall. Above the fireplace a television was airing a music channel that didn’t correspond with the music that was playing. On the rear wall to the left of the counter is a dartboard and to the right a spiral staircase leads up to the first floor, which must be the advertised function room. To the right is a separate room with another dartboard and padded bench seat around the walls that face in to a pool table that was covered over.
Walking to the bar I was directed to sit down for table service, no idea why. Standard keg was available alongside Birra Moretti and Cruzcampo. The three hand pumps were drawing Old Peculiar, Doom Bar and Copper Dragon’s Golden Pippin cider. The cider name and Gollum on the pub’s hanging sign out from were the only references that could be attributed to Middle Earth, which was a shame because I was looking forward to seeing some orcs and goblins. An interesting name, but a rather forgettable modernised pub.

One room with the bar in the middle. Old Peculiar on hand pump which was OK. Some guys came in who actually go in my local in Wakefield. Amazing!

Well described below. There were 3 beers on when I visited and I went for the Copper Dragon Golden Pippin which was fine. Glad I called in if only for the pub name!!
