Now the sole surviving pub in this rather god-forsaken former mining village, the Lay By does its best to be Salsburgh’s centre of entertainment. The spacious one room bar has a pool table, juke box, gaming machines and flat screen TVs. Nevertheless, from the customers’ conversations, it was clear that many of them travel the 4 miles to Airdrie in search of a greater variety of drinking options. This is the kind of place where you stand out immediately as not being one of the villagers, although not in an unfriendly way. Pleasant enough, but not worth going out of your way to visit.
