Variety Bar is a small venue with a corner entrance that opens onto the bar area with serving counter up the left and banquettes up the right. There’s an open plan area with small tables opposite the counter and a large fishtank runs across the rear behind which a staircase leads down to the toilets. More seating is found behind this staircase. Premium and craft keg options were available from the two friendly barmaids who looked like they’d had a very busy weekend. I went for a Joker IPA which was OK. I’ll probably walk past next time I’m in the area.

The Variety is well worth a visit if you haven't been. Whilst it does have a bit of a pretentious reputation it also has an amazingly wide clientèle base consisting of arty types, students, office workers, old blokes, normal guys and tourists all sitting together and getting on. As important as the regulars and the booze is the atmosphere in this pub, the lovely Art Deco touches (that have seen better days but that adds to it all) , the black floor and tables and lighter coloured walls, the fish tank (yep a ruddy big fish tank in the middle of the bar - the things those poor fish mustta seen?!!) , the old film being projected onto the far wall and the lighting all make for a relaxing and interesting visit. The bar itself isn't that big but it is well stocked with some good beers on tap and a wide variety of bottled premium beers and a good selection of spirits, you can also get really good tea , coffee , espresso etc as well. Seating is ample with tables and large seated areas as you enter and tables at the back of the bar although if you like to sit at the bar itself (like me) it can get crowded at times with regulars all claiming their place. The bar also has some seriously good food with a "Smoak" pop up canteen selling truly amazing burgers and nachos - in addition they play some really good music as well ( although as the night goes on the err more "modern" stuff can be played) Staff are pretty cool as well, regulars are friendly but tend to keep themselves to themselves so not a place (in general) to have a chat - Toilets let it down though.
