A lot less rough and ready than it was 15 years ago which is a bit of a shame - still has some seafaring character (mainly artifact-based) if somewhat scrubbed rather than nicely grubby. Guided by the locals CAMRAs and there were three ales on. I initially only had eyes for the Spingo Middle which sadly poured a thick cloudy minging mess. Taken back and taken off with an apology and a bit of grumbling about it being another one they’ve been sent which is ullage (PRO-TIP – try some yourself before you put it on sale?!). Anyway, the Penzance beer I had as replacement was much better (NBSS 4) so they salvaged the situation to a fair degree, so I’d say it’s worth going.
April 2009
Popped in purely on the strength of the availability of the Spingo Ale (sourced from the Blue Anchor in Helston). Inside we were met by a heavy nautical theme (check out the old nicotine-stained maritime maps plastered across the wall in the back bar), a bearded barman who could well have been Jethro's brother and a raucous game of poker. I did worry briefly that we'd stepped into proper locals territory. Fortunately the Spingo was in decent nick and we got some good banter from the poker players when we started playing Pass the Pigs. Although it was a relatively quiet midweek night out of season, I could imagine this place would pack in some real atmosphere at the weekend. Two ales in total, the other being Doombar, competitively priced for the area. If you're looking for an unusual beer and a bit of banter just outside the immediate town 'strip' of pubs, you could do a lot worse than pop in here for a couple of Spingos. Rated 8

Good Beer Guide 2021 Entry.
A real mixture of punters - workers from the docks, old boys, tourists who have booked rooms, ramblers.
A top level bar with a real fire is prime location. Down some steps and some nice ox-blood chesterfields and tables laid out for dining. Outdoor smoking terrace around the back.
Lovely welcome, good service, dog friendly and a decent first pint of Potion Number 9 from Penzance Brewery.

The pub is still much as described by others, below. The smoking shelter at the back is quite malodorous, a shame given that it is necessary to traverse this when using the B&B facilities outside opening hours. There is a very limited amount of parking at the front. Food was freshy cooked and good value and they were very helpful in providing a doggy bag when asked. The accommodation was basic but good enough for a night. Three ales on draught – Doombar, Spingo IPA and one I forgot to note down. The beer was in excellent condition, justifying the GBG entry, and I’d be very happy to come back here.
