A corner pub, on the main thoroughfare through town. We had been for a lovely walk on the beach and thought we would stop off for one one on the way back. Entered through a side door, into a large pool room (single table), the main bar is where all the punters are. A logburner fully loaded. Bar and a small number of typical pub tables and bench seating. Looked like the locals "bar hung" with the tourists at the tables.
There was one cask on - Tribute. A quick look around and I could see all other beer drinkers were on lager. They also had Proper Job on Keg. I decided this would be the safer option and it was in fine condition/proper glass.
In an unusual move, the lady being served before me wanted a lime and soda. Not saying they do this everytime, but payment was refused for this soft drink. Nice touch, that I have never seen before - just very variable/random pricing for said drink.
Popped back in later in the week for a near identical experience of locals bar hanging and a roaring fire. Really fancied a whisky and in all the pubs in Hayle, this one at least carried a couple of malts. I really should have asked the price first. Laphroaig Select 10 is not an expensive whisky. You can get it for around £30 in all supermarkets. To be charged £12.95 for a 50ml measure is outrageous. I politely challenged, not least for how you a price ending 5p on a double and was told bluntly - I don't set the prices! I looked around for a price menu but if there, it wasn't easily found.
Maybe I am being naive but this seemed excessive to me!

Tired old place,,, tired old personnel,,, tired old atmosphere = NONE.
Beers not consistent – one day might be acceptable – but the next, like vinegar.
Our 3 families used to visit 5 or 6 times per year.
The general atmosphere used to be very convivial, as the local ‘bar flies’ brought us all into the current ‘giggles’ – which we were invited to laugh along with.
Unfortunately, this has all gone.
The last couple of times we’ve been, some sad old lady kept butting in to peoples private conversations (not just ours), with banal comments, and a portly old guy was there telling ‘Cornish’ stories, that were totally offensive to all colours, creeds, sexes & ages. The language from them both was hard to bear in a public environment. We thought they were the village ‘acceptable’ locals, but were astounded when this turned out to be the landlord & landlady.
There is no camaraderie with the staff either, because they changed every few days, as they came & went. Lots of them only lasted a couple of days before leaving, or ‘not up to our standards’ !!!!! Maybe this was the greasy fingerprints on the glasses, as the bar staff much through bags of snacks ! Utter shambles.
A completely different place ‘of old’. None of our families or colleagues/families go there any more. Such a shame - one minute great, the next – nothing.
Time for a change.
