Two rooms off a porch - right for dining, left for drinking. The small drinker’s bar is fairly atmospheric and attractive with exposed brick, low wonky wood beams and an unusual carved wood section on the right hand wall. Rammed for the rugby so space at a premium. Three ales on, Hogs Back, Wye Valley and something that might have been Brains or Gales (there was a contradictory barrel label stuck over a pumpclip) which was good either way (NBSS 3.5). All mildly chaotic but I thought it was decent overall, a shame I couldn’t really settle due the sardine tin capacity. Probably the best in show for Monmouth that day. 6.5

Large pub at lower end of town with a rather dark wood panelled interior in two large and separate rooms. garden at rear. Clientele mainly in for its fairly heavy food trade but it did provide a reasonable pint of Bass.
