A substantial pub building in brick and proudly displaying the fact it opens at noon all days ,which is unusual among the better real ale pubs in this fine city.It has a Victorian feel, the entrance corridor has a banquette and then opens out to the tap room while to the front is a seperate front room which can be closed off and hired privately but was available on my trip and was a comfortable place to sit with large fitted bench seating and two stand alone tables one with a chess board inlaid.
Beyond the tap room is a raised seating section while out the back is a heated beer patio.
The ale options on my trip were Roosters Yankee,Bradfield Farmers Blonde,Abbeydale Daily Bread,Vocation Victorian Porter and Acorn Must IPA (NBSS 4) together with an Old Rosie cider. There were two further boxed cider but only mainstream kegs.
The wall covering were mainly large photos of the nearby Minster and Shambles while a large flatscreen was showing terrestrial sport on mute. The events board notes two weekly quizes,a blues jam and Saturday live music while the food options seem to be pork pies.
Really should be on any real ale crawl,I liked the correct pouring on an ale which requires a tight sparkler and the relaxed vibe.I would certainly return.

The Black Horse was one of the busier pubs I visited on a recent Thursday evening. To the right of the entrance is a square open plan seating area that is available for hire. This pub must get very busy when there is a function because this area was full with locals and tourists. The bar counter runs mid-way up the right wall facing seating up the left, and at the rear is a raised seating area that was equally as busy. The counter supports a limited selection of premium and craft keg, and I counted six hand pumps that were drawing Ainsty Ales’ Cool Citra, Sharp’s Solar Wave, Acorn Brewery’s Barnsley, Rudgate’s Chocolate Stout, Rooster’s Yankee and Weston’s Old Rosie Cider. This is a traditional pub with good beer, atmosphere and very friendly service from the barmaid, what’s not to like!

Excellent pub just out of city centre with a good semi-traditional layout and feel to it. A good range of beers and several ciders on also at time of visit.
