You can tell it is a Sam Smith's pub due to the almost total lack of signage, branding or advertising, apart from the pub sign itself. This is also possibly one of the reasons why it was so quiet, along with the usual Humphrey oppressions of course. Anyway, it is a rare 1980s-built traditional pub, much nicer than the usual purpose-built eateries of the period, with tasteful and sedate furnishings and decor, although some of it is showing its age. The public bar is across one side, with a lounge and family room facing the car park, all very tidy and pleasant enough for a pint or two of OBB. It's nice enough to be a bustling, thriving place. It isn't.

A newish build, single storey, brick building close to the barracks and surprisingly it’s an open Sam Smith’s pub. There’s a traditional layout of lounge and public bars, the lounge across the front and the public down one side complete with pool table. The lounge is divided into three open areas, the first of which shares an L shaped servery with the public bar, the middle is seating and the third is apparently a dining area. There are two pulls with the standard over-cooled, slightly vinegary OBB plus the usual collection of small boxes. Tastefully furnished and decorated with upholstered banquettes, comfy chairs, sofas and armchairs, there’s a nice carpet too. The décor is old photos, mainly of York city, the light fittings and fireplace in the lounge have a deco style, there are of course the usual Sam’s signs saying no this, that or the other.
