I've never really warmed to this pub since it was transformed by the owner of Don Valley Brewery with what the previous reviewer correctly identified as the contents of the V and A. You'd think they'd have missed them by now. I find it not so much impressive as claustrophobic. The bar has quite a decent range of hand pumps, including their own Atomic Blonde. I went for Three Brothers Ruby Revolution, a 4.6% malty beer that went down well (NBSS 3.5, £4.80/pint). Unfortunately I can never seem to get comfortable here, and it was also pretty cold and the background music was pretty annoying, so it's really only the beer quality and the service that gets the pub up to a rating of 6; even that's probably rounded up from 5.5.

A very impressive pub both inside and out, bordering on a curated museum piece. The collection of Victorian lamps, displayed in the main lounge was like something from the V & A museum. The pub was very busy on our Tuesday eve visit as it was quiz night, with the majority of the customers straight from Uni. The young barman who served me was very attentive and noticed my beer needed topping up, which was good. Five beers on pump, three from Don Valley, Kiss the Sky, Atomic Blonde & Sweet Child O'Mine, and the guests were Nightjar Thomas the Dank Engine & TT Boltmaker. For some reason this is a card only pub, so you can overspend quite easily without knowing about it until the next morning.

With a 4pm opening on weekdays, we arrived shortly after this pub had opened for the day. As such, there was just ourselves and the landlady throughout the duration of our visit. However, she was able to give us a potted history of the pub and a bit of a guided tour.
The pub has a very traditional feel with multiple rooms. Although much of it is new. The attention to detail is impressive and just when we thought we'd seen it all, the landlady showed us a large outdoor area to the side, much of it covered and with large TV screens for showing live sporting events and the like.
The pub is a Don Valley one. So Atomic Blonde & Gongoozler are regular beers. They also had their Best of You and a couple of guests from Nightjar - Easy Does It & Don't Overthink Your Socks. Craft beers were Tiny Rebel Cali Pale, Salt Huckaback, Brewdog Hazy Jane & Don Valley Zest For Life. There's a 10% discount for CAMRA card holders.
I have to say that I was left impressed by this backstreet pub. It's a strange mix of old and new, but you can tell that a lot of thought, effort and money has gone into making this into a pub with a traditional feel. I hope they can continue to make it a going concern.
