And before the Eagle and Spur - The Spin Eagle.

Rambling pub made of at least two knocked together buildings not directly in line with each other. Leads to a higgledy-piggledy interior with rooms off corridors. A front lounge had the comfiest seating, with some battered fabric chesterfields.

One bar had three pumps with no cask on. I enquired and the two casks were around the corner on another bar. Both Wye Valley - HPA and Pyoneer. The HPA was in decent nick. You can tell just by looking at it.

A few locals and their kids - it was half term, mid week.

Formerly the Eagle & Spur, but I guess the name changed during a recent refurbishment? That said, the small public bar is still quite basic, and the compact lounge, don't look recently altered (although the exterior paintwork suggests otherwise). Timothy Taylor beers on handpump, with Boltmaker (£3.90) and Golden Best being served in the former (with Landlord coming next by the look of things) and - as it turned out on later inspection - Wye Valley HPA and Holden's Golden Glow available in the latter.

This is a large, sprawling pub as it has a conservatory. It also with patio area. The buildings look Georgian to me, but it was certainly a pub in the Victorian period. The main room is an irregular shape with a corner serving bar but we headed to a smaller lounge, which is in white, light green and feature wallpaper - so vogue really. It has a nice fireplace and old photos to give a heritage feel and there is a dartboard. I didn't notice a TV and there was no music. Service was friendly and it was quite busy at our late visit with a mixed clientele. Three real ales on: Bath Summer Hare, Deuchars IPA and the Eagle & Spur Traditional Bitter (brewed by Caledonian) which was fine enough. A pleasant enough stop off.
