The Ox Row Inn is a Fullers pub that bridges the shops along Butcher Row to the south to the large Market Square to the north where there’s some café seating. Entering from the shop side, the door opens to a flagstone floored central walkway with banquettes and a couple of tables on small carpeted areas either side, with the addition of a log burning fireplace to the left. There’s a central J-shaped serving counter that supports premium and mainstream craft keg alongside four hand pumps that were drawing Pride, ESB, Oliver’s Island and Five Points Brewing’s XPA. Past the counter in the wooden floored rear there are banquettes up the left-hand wall and tables up the right, and the door to the Market Square is in the rear wall. The serving counter extends into the flagstone floored sunken right-hand side of the pub that is geared towards dining with set tables beyond a ‘wait to be seated’ sign. A flight of stairs climbs to the first floor where I didn’t investigate, but I assumed more dining seating. I didn’t spot any electronic visual distractions, but there was some very low background music playing. My visit was before midday, so there were only a handful of other customers, but I could see that it would be hard to get comfortable during busy periods. I also found the young barmaid to be as miserable as sin, so I guessed she’d just started an all-day shift in a job she hates. I’m a big fan of a Fullers pub, but this one feels a bit anonymous, maybe too touristy (says the tourist!), so I don’t think I’ll be revisiting when there are some great pubs nearby.
