An amazing building on the outside, but totally modern once you step through the door. The modern bar counter is on the right, with modern wooden top, modern grey painted panels and modern footrest (OK, that's enough). Three hand pumps with a house beer by Downlands, Harvey's Sussex Best and Rosie's Pig turned around. I went for a half of each of the two beers, which came to £6.30. I did spot on the computer screen that the Harvey's was £3.40, so the Downlands was £2.90. The latter was an American hopped amber beer and very good (NBSS 4), while the Sussex was the best I've had on this trip, a fairly lively NBSS 3.5. Slightly disappointed that the interior is so modern - you'd never have guessed - but it's handy for the bus stop and I really needed a beer after a hot walk from the previous pub that wasn't open when I thought it was, so I've upped the rating from 6 to 7.

The Castle Inn Hotel sits in the shadow of the Bramber Castle ruins in the centre of Bramber village.

With only outdoor drinking allowed, the car park has been converted into a makeshift drinking area. This is not too much of a problem, as there is a free public car park opposite the pub. However, it's not the best atmosphere in which to enjoy a drink.

The three ales here are Sharp's Doom Bar, Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter & Downlands Bramber. The lunch food session had finished by the time we arrived mid-afternoon, but prices seemed on the high side. Highlight of our visit was the attractive barmaid!
