The Four Chesnuts has a central parquet floored bar with a serving counter across the rear that supports Fosters alongside some premium lagers and Neck Oil, the days of cask being here are long gone. The left-hand side of the pub is T-shaped with high tables that are overlooked by televisions that were airing Saturday afternoon football via TNT Sports. There were about 15 people sat watching the football under Six Nations bunting, the rugby was due to kick off later in the day. To the right of the counter is a step up to some seating adjacent to booths that run to the right where a pool table, dartboard and large television reside. Out the back is a thin Astroturf covered beer garden with two rows of picnic tables that are shielded from the roads either side by a chest high wall. The governor was friendly enough and I would drink here if I lived this side of town, but I won’t be making a special trip out again to revisit when next in Chichester.

Well, I had pretty high hopes of this one but, I don't know, it just didn't work for me. It's a little way out of the centre, so maybe that accounted for the lack of custom late on a summer afternoon, but I'd expected a place with such a good reputation to be rather busier. On reflection, though, maybe it was the prices: £3.55 for a pint of mild (Ballards Midhurst) seemed pretty steep even by Chichester standards. Beer quality was fine, however, and the pool players amongst the party were grateful for the lack of crowds.

I think that a return visit may be called for. As I say, the Four Chesnuts is well-renowned for the range of its beer and I'd like to be there when it's busier to get a bit of atmosphere going.

As a 'footnote' to Danny O'Revey's comment: the website advises 4p.m. opening on a Monday.
