The wood panelled serving counter of the Kings Head is found in the split-level wooden floored bar area where five hand pumps are supported, only one of which was in use, drawing TT Boltmaker during a recent midweek afternoon visit. Estrella and Peroni are also available, which I thought was the extent of the draught, but the counter continues past a chimney breast and burning log fireplace into another seating area where more premium keg is available. I sat at one of the tables across the wall opposite the counter where I could see back to the glass entrance and busy restaurant beyond. The other side of the pub is carpeted and feels like a hotel lounge, in fact this is a hotel… so it is a hotel lounge. I spotted another couple of log fires and some snugs with parquet and flagstone flooring. The décor feels like it was updated to a decent standard about 15 years ago. There was some background music playing, but I didn’t spot a television and the barman was very friendly, but this isn’t my sort of place.

M&B Vintage Inn cum Innkeepers Lodge affair. This one has escaped the usual dreadful refurbishment that M&B indulges in when it brands pubs thus. From a central entrance lobby there is a reasonably traditional wood panelled public bar to the right, a lounge with open fire ahead and formal dining area to the right. It's all tastefully done out and feels comfortable and welcoming. Handpumps dispensing, inevitably, DoomBore (on two pumps) and Old Rosie, and, thankfully, Purity Pure Gold in excellent condition. Usual stodgy Vintage Inns menu, the stuff your in-laws might enjoy, but certainly a worthwhile stop for a pint or three if you find yourself in these parts.
