Very much as described below, right down to Nick’s description of the white van sect. The young male staff were rather amateurish, though the barman was at least personable. Food was formulaic and dull, with different elements in different dishes, arriving at different times. We had to prompt for a main course, which, it transpired, had been sitting on the side in the kitchen for 15 minutes even though ‘the till’ said it had been served. Other customers had brought in noisy children, some of whom pestered our dogs, and whose parents looked rather put out when we warned them not to. Two ales on, Bath Gem and Charles Wells’s HPA, both in good condition but not exciting. Not somewhere to which I’d rush back, but useful enough if passing on the canal and in need of a pint

It remains very popular with a wide clientele, from boaters to walkers to groups of more mature customers having lunch to, I'm afraid, a sweary white van contingent later in the afternoon. That it's the only pub you can be sure to be open on a weekday afternoon is an attraction, along with the vast array of other facilities documented below. Beer range remains unchanged, Courage Best and Bombardier Gold, and food is of the vast mountains of stodge genre.
A better beer range would make it a fine destination pub but as things stand we're in 'stop by if you're passing' territory.

Peculiar pub which is certainly making an effort (as described below) but somehow doesn't quite make it. Sampled a pint of Thwaites Lancaster Bomber which was in good order, and opening hours very good, but didn't feel inclinced to stay.
