This feels like a modern bar in an older building, but this could just be the result of a refurbishment gone wrong, or at least in poor taste. Roughly applied plaster, beams, walls and brick either badly done or in the wrong places or both. The woman who seemed to be in charge was obviously not actually in charge. A middle aged terrier started barking at me as I walked towards the bar, and she complained about the dog rather than apologising to me. She claimed not to understand why he did it, then gave it a treat as "that's the only way to stop him". She'll still be trying to figure out why the dog was always barking long after he's dead. The other dog was much younger and came over to me when I was sat down with a beer and had a good sniff of my nether regions. I complained fairly mildly about this behaviour, and got a look that seemed to say, "didn't you see the sign on the door that says DOG LOVERS ONLY". After all this, the matter of beer options and quality seems a little irrelevant, but there was Shepherd Neame Bishops Finger (why?) and Bass; the latter was a bit lively and took about three goes to get it to fit the glass, but it tasted pretty good. There were also three real ciders in boxed polypins behind the bar. No doubt there are regulars who think this place is the bee's knees, but if any of my friends ever see me in here again I hope they will take me outside and shoot me.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Hat & Beaver
Looks from the road as if it has been modernised, but this pub remains unashamedly traditional inside. Retaining a two-bar layout, separated by a couple of steps, with the rear room having a small extension. Bass and two Cotleigh beers - Hawk brown ale (£2.40) and Honey Buzzard - plus Old Rosie cider available from the three handpumps on each counter.

The Hat and Beaver is a basic looking town pub that looked like an old John Smiths tied house from years ago with its colour scheme.
Once inside the pub still has two seperate rooms,i had a drink in the front room which is the bar, this room was quite basic with a tiled floor, the seating was bench type, there were two TVs on,one was showing Horse racing, the other showing the West Ham v Man City game.
There is a smarter lounge to the rear which is oblong shaped, the room was carpeted and had comfy bench seating.
There were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Bass which was a decent drink, the other beer was Cottage Ghost Train.
I quite like drinking in basic pubs like this.
