After a period of closure ,food is a definite theme here although just drinking is fine. The interior is now painted in a dark Farrow & Ball scheme, fine in the low ceiling area at the bar and to the right but dark and gloomy in the vaulted room to the left. The low beams attest to the age of the right side, one fireplace works ,furniture is traditional with some large heavy wood tables but the area immediately by the bar has two black leather comfy chairs indicating the front of the pub as a drinking area ,the tables around are not cluttered with menus ,condiments and cutlery.
At the rear of the building in a more modern extension is the dining room, laid for service and this is where diners concentrated close to french windows onto the large beer garden with pic nic benches all numbered for al fresco dining.
The food is well cooked ,pricing is a premium with mains £15 to £20+ but seemed justified. At the bar Hogs Back TEA,a house King Billy provenance unknown and a very good Surrey Hills Shere Drop ,NBSS 4.
I enjoyed my lunchtime visit and the fact that diners are generally away from the bar area helped ,not sure whether this becomes more of a village local in the evening but I suspect the advice to book for evening food might indicate what will dominate.

You enter stepping down through a particularly low doorway with much needed signage about minding one's head and with an obviously aged wisteria climbing above. Immediately opposite is the bar, the ceiling inside this area is also low and has blackened beams. The pub itself dates from around 1830 however parts are formed from former cottages which of course would be older.
To the left is a side area with a much higher vaulted roof and lots of exposed brickwork, a dartboard in here is hidden inside a case and doesn't look to be readily usable.
To the other side the room splits, returning to the side where there is a 1970s style piano or continuing on into an area with a large dining table and a pair of booths. Both areas then link up at the rear where a more modern add-on houses a dining area with fake black ceiling beams and a couple of dressers/sideboards, one containing board games and a few toys. Doors lead out from here to a rear garden with some covered seating, a play area and an outdoor bottle bar.
Several fireplaces contain stacked logs, it is not clear if they get use in the winter but it would be a missed opportunity if they don't, flooring is mostly wooden boarding with black lacquering. There is an old clocking in machine by the front entrance.
Four on handpump, Courage Best and Directors, Pride and thankfully Surrey Hills Shere Drop which was ok.
I'm not entirely sure what this pub is trying to be, a country pub, a restaurant, a family friendly venue, possibly a bit of all three which doesn't always work, the not unpleasant ambience was however less than enhanced by the pop music playing.

A good sized country pub as mentioned before, reasonably lively on my visit early on a Thursday evening with a good mix of customers across several age groups. A nice pubby feel verging on the olde worldy with a mix of flagstone and wooden boarded floors throughout the main slightly meandering front bar, following round to a more dedicated dining area to the rear, this in turn leads out to a decent sized beer garden, firstly a raised decking area, down to a grassed section with a kids play area in the far corner.
On the bar beerwise were four pumps dispensing,Surrey Hills Shere Drop, Bath Gem as well as the more pedestrian Courage Best and Directors along with the normal keggy stuff. My pint of Shere Drop was clear and perfectly drinkable but a little lacking in its normal decent flavour so maybe it was toward the end of the barrel, other than that I enjoyed the pub more than I was expecting and didn't find it unwelcoming at all.
