The Railway Guard is located in a quiet Epsom street with some seating out the front. Inside, all the upholstery looks new, and there's at least 2 screens showing TV sport, though the volume of the horse racing was sufficiently low to be unobtrusive (Premier League football is most likely a different matter).

On the bar, you'll find 5 hand pumps and I found 4 of them pouring - Pride, Black Sheep Best, TT Boltmaker and a local offering of Surrey Hills Ranmore, which slipped down very nicely. The keg taps are all corporate, with 4 big brands on big shiny fonts and 4 on a smaller set.

This was much better than you might expect and deserving of a visit, especially with a pair of decent pubs a few minutes away in opposite directions.

A down-to-earth locals' pub, apart from the slight affectation of candles on the tables, so perhaps it gets a trendier clientele later on. Quite a nice feel to the place, with fairly traditional furnishings but in some modern colours, and a couple of sport TVs. The layout is a bit jumbled, where presumably some walls have been taken out and the central bar holds a nice bank of 5 handpumps. Sadly the two Surrey Hills (Ranmore and Shere Drop) and the Otter Ale were all off, leaving just London Pride and TT Boltmaker. Overall a good effort but room for improvement.

The pub consists of a single elongated L-shaped room with the rear area semi-separated by the see through gas fire and chimney. Carpeted with banquette and stool seating I agree with Rex below that the fake black beams and pillars on the white background give that retro 70s feel. The service was quick and friendly, five handpumps with three on at the time, Pride, Young's Bitter and Black Sheep Bitter with Timothy Taylor's Landlord "coming soon". A recess at the back has a fully functioning dartboard with blackboards and even a couple of sets of darts to borrow. Some sporting memorabilia in the form of framed prints of The Daily Mirror celebrating England's win in '66, a picture of George Best getting the better of Ron "Chopper" Harris and a framed Man Utd v Anderlecht programme from the 1968-9 season. There are also darts and rugby related photographs. An old photo of the pub from some time back shows it once to serve Mitcham Ales.
Several TVs were on offering a choice of darts or rugby but with the volume competing unsuccessfully with the juke box. I noticed that there is also occasional live music, lets hope they switch the TV volume down when that is on!
Not a bad pub in all and friendly despite being a locals sort of place.
