This pub is part of the Sizzling Pubs chain. It's a typical chain pub that focuses on food but unusually, this one appears as one of just 5 Rotherham pubs in the current Good Beer Guide.

The pub has lots of food promotions, whilst drinks are expensive. A Tuesday cask club price of £2.95 per pint was a bit more appealing, but at other times prices are well above average for the area.

During our visit, music was playing and a TV in one corner was showing motor racing. As you would expect, families including children are welcome. I saw at least one grabbing machine and there were multiple games machines. The pub hosts quiz nights 3 times each week, which seems a little overkill. Whilst it's a nice-looking building from the outside, it has a typical characterless chain pub feel inside. The pub car park had one car with flat tyres that didn't look like it had moved for months.

Onto the cask ale selection. I was hoping for a redeeming feature and with 3 handpulls, there was a little promise. Despite this, St Austell Proper Job was the only cask ale available when we arrived. Wychwood Hobgoblin was being poured through, with the third handpull being clipped with Weston's Medium Dry Vintage. At 8.2%, the cider was unappealing for me. On saying this, the bar manager appeared to snap back asking which beer was 8.2%. Well, it certainly wasn't the Proper Job or Hobgoblin!

I can only imagine that the Proper Job and the Hobgoblin must be kept in perfect condition for the pub to appear in the Good Beer Guide. I guess, this pub is just a filler in the Guide for the local CAMRA people. Maybe the discount for CAMRA members helps sway a decision. For me, it was distinctly average.
